It wouldn’t be match day for Drumoghill FC these days if it didn’t have another Liam O’Donnell hat-trick, and the striker duly obliged with another treble against Raphoe Town at the Moss.
The striker is in one of the hottest streaks of his already goal-laden career at the minute and his goals show no sign of slowing up with this latest bombardment, as Drumoghill cling on to the coat-tails of Kerrykeel and Convoy Arsenal at the top of the division.
Although Drumoghill ran out comfortable winners, the scoreline was somewhat harsh on the visitors who only trailed by the minimum at the break after Karol McGinley’s first half strike was the difference between the sides and had restored parity at the beginning of the second half after Jak Gallagher finished well after being set up by Oran Kelly.
However, a fifteen minute spell either side of the hour mark was to prove pivotal in deciding the outcome of the game and it was during this period that Liam O’Donnell.
Dylan McElhinney put the reds back into the lead on 47mins before Liam notched his first on 52 minutes when he got in front of Finn Canning to find the net.
Liam O'Donnell then beat Sean Friel with a low drive on 57 minutes before Karol McGinley extended the lead further on 61 minutes when set up by Zak Brolly to fire home.
Raphoe did pull one back on 66 minutes through Luke Donohue but the game was over as a contest minutes later when Liam O'Donnell tapped home after being setup by Colm Gardiner to complete his hat-trick.
Keelin Bogle did hit the post with a fine left-footed effort shortly afterwards but Drumoghill ran out comfortable winners as they head into the Christmas break.
The break couldn’t have come at a worse time for Liam O’Donnell but no doubt he’ll be looking forward to maintain his form as Drumoghill begin the new year with eyes on promotion.
Match referee Matthew Hull was excellent throughout.
