Drumoghill 1-1 Whitestrand United
It ended all square at The Moss as Drumoghill and Whitestrand shared the spoils on the opening day of the near season and when both teams reflect on today’s game they will probably agree that a draw was a fair result.
Although both sides had chances to win the game, neither side deserved to lose.
Drumoghill have got the better of Whitestrand in recent games at The Moss and it looked like that pattern would continue after Liam O’Donnell gave them the perfect start straight from the kick off.
There appeared little until Colm Gardiner took possession from the kick off but he found the space to open up the Whitestrand defence with a perfect pass into O'Donnell's path and the striker evaded the challenges of Ciaran Sweeney and Cormac Shovelin before first home from a tight angle.
The visitors though responded well and took advantage of a mix up in the Drumoghill defence on 30 minutes that allowed Cormac Dunleavy the chance to fire beyond the reach of Roy Duffy.
Both sides had chances to win the game in the second half as both had eyes on all 3 points with Liam O’Donnell going very close with a header before Duffy saved well from an excellent effort from Ronan Sweeney. In fact, both goalkeepers had excellent second halves as but Roy Duffy and Declan Broughan were equal to anything thrown at them.
A special word for young referee Thomas Ferry who was taking charge of his first Donegal League game. He was excellent throughout and got all the big calls right.
